Dakota Fanning Oh, Lola ad Banning (video)
A perfume ad featuring teen movie star Dakota Fanning has been deemed more kiddie porn than teen chic.
The Advertising Standards Authority in the U.K. has banned an ad for Marc Jacobs’ Oh, Lola! Fragrance, claiming the image of the 17-year-old Fanning with a large bottle of scent with an oversized floral top positioned between her legs sexualized children.
The ASA agreed with complaints and judged that the actress may have been 17 when the ads were shot but she looked younger.
“We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality,” the ASA said in a statement. “Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualize a child.”
It did not help that the ad was made intentionally controversial: Designer Jacobs had dubbed his “sensual” Oh, Lola! fragrance — a companion scent to his 2008 Lola perfume — to be “more Lolita than a Lola,” according to the Telegraph.
The young, teenaged Fanning bears a resemblance to Sue Lyon, the star of the 1962 film “Lolita,” the story a man who falls madly in love with a teenaged girl with tragic results, based on the 1955 novel by Vladimir Nabokov.Coty, the perfumiers behind Oh, Lola!, are defending the ads, telling the Telegraph that the ad was in no way sexually inappropriate and that the enormous pink-flower bottle top protruding between her legs was "provoking, but not indecent".Jacobs recently signed the “Twilight” star’s 13-year-old sister Elle Fanning to star in his Marc by Marc Jacobs ad campaigns.Dakota Fanning was the subject of similar controversy back in 2006 over her role in the indie film “Hounddog.”Critics of the film were outraged over an explicit rape scene featuring the then 12-year-old actress.
