Berlusconi dismisses sex trial girl as liar. (apr 14 2010)

ROME - Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi dismissed the girl at the heart of his sex trial as an over-imaginative liar and shrugged off his legal woes at a dinner with foreign reporters this week.Berlusconi said "Ruby the Heart Stealer" — the Moroccan-born dancer he allegedly paid for underage sex — was a "mythomaniac," who lied exaggeratedly, though he stressed she did it against her will and couldn't be blamed.
Despite a brief tirade against Italian magistrates he has long accused of persecuting him through the courts for political reasons, the premier was all smiles, congratulating himself on his charm and affable nature.
"I have a talent for being friendly, getting people to think highly of me and making friends," the roguish 74-year old told reporters during a private, off- the-record evening on Tuesday, details of which were then leaked by press.
Damaged in the popularity polls by the "RubyGate" sex scandal, Berlusconi said he was unlikely to seek reelection at the next elections in 2013 and named a possible successor as incumbent Justice Minister Angelo Alfano.
Alfano enjoyed a legal coup on Wednesday when Italy's lower chamber voted in favour of his judicial reform bill, which critics have argued has been designed for the express purpose of saving Berlusconi from his legal woes.

The premier said he had "no intention" of running for president, saying the post would be best filled by his right hand man Gianni Letta.
The premier, renowned for his love of curvaceous women and dirty jokes, was uncharacteristically restrained during the dinner, though he did invite the collected reporters to one of his famous "bunga bunga" parties.
On Wednesday, it emerged that two witnesses at one such party held last August had told prosecutors in the Ruby case they had been sickened by the erotic games the other guests indulged in with the prime minister.
The girls said they had been invited by the premier's close friend, anchorman Emilio Fede, who had promised to get the pair jobs as weather girls on the television channel and implied he wanted sexual relations with them.
79-year old Fede is currently under investigation for procuring prostitutes for Berlusconi.
The premier dismissed the accusations as absurd, joking that his 80-year old friend couldn't find his penis if he tried.

The trial of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on charges of sexual misconduct and abuse of power opened Wednesday in Milan and was almost immediately adjourned until May 31.
It was one of the most anticipated courtroom events in Italy's history, with evidence to include testimony on alleged orgy-like parties at Berlusconi's villa and phone-tap transcripts featuring girls who were said to be paid handsomely to entertain male guests.
It began with an anticlimactic 10-minute hearing. The defense witness list of high-ranking friends, ministers, members of parliament, TV presenters and actors is said to include George Clooney, who owns a villa nearby on Lake Como.Neither Berlusconi nor Moroccan performer Karima El Mahroug, known by her stage name Ruby Rubacuori — Ruby the heart stealer — was present.

The 74-year-old premier is accused of paying for sex with Mahroug last year, when she was 17 — a year under the age for legal prostitution in Italy — when he invited her to parties in his villa at Arcore, outside Milan, described in the press as feasts that included striptease and sex.The premier has always protested his innocence, denying having sex with her and saying she lied about her age.

He is also charged with making phone calls to Milan police in May 2010 to release her from arrest on suspicion of stealing more than $4,000, claiming she was related to then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Berlusconi says he was convinced that she was related to Mubarak and was trying to avoid a diplomatic incident.Berlusconi, who accuses the Italian judiciary of being politically motivated against him, also faces other trials for corruption, fraud and embezzlement related to his activities as a media entrepreneur.Wednesday's hearing came a day after the Italian parliament had ruled by a narrow margin in favor of moving the trial to a special ministerial court rather than the Milan court, prompted by the charges of abuse of power. However, the decision is not expected to affect the trial until it is confirmed by the Constitutional Court, Reuters news agency reported.Press coverage of Wednesday's trial was limited to newspaper and agency reporters; TV cameras normally allowed into Italian courtrooms were kept outside.Reports that Mahroug would join the prosecution were denied by her defense lawyer, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. It said her lawyer, Paolo Boccardi, told the court that his client would not be claiming damages as she "did not suffer any damage for going sometimes to Arcore, neither from frequenting the prime minister."Boccardi also said the charge of prostitution contradicted "what Karima has always said, that she was never the object of sexual acts on the part of the prime minister ....she has always affirmed that she is not a prostitute, while this trial takes it for granted that she gave herself in return for payment."
